Learn how to use a cut-pile power rug tufting machine to create your own finished handmade rug!
This hands-on instructional class will cover the basics:
• tools + materials
• threading + operating tufting machines
• gluing + backing
• finishing options
• carving with electric shears
Participants will be set up at their own workspace including a tufting machine, pre-stretched frame, backing fabric, tools + supplies. Frames will be pre-stretched with primary fabric and projected with your provided design. Emily will guide the process start-to-finish, answering any questions along the way!
Participants will leave this 2-day workshop with a finished 24”x24” tufted rug, a handy quick-start guide, and the knowledge to continue making rugs on their own!

✦ DAY 1
Learn about the machine, materials, and workspace. Tuft your entire rug and apply glue!
This is the only day we'll be using the tufting machines.
✦ DAY 2
Attach the backing, trim with shears + scissors, and finish your rug! Clean up.
There is no official break time, but participants are welcome to break anytime they wish! Feel free to bring any snacks or drinks to nibble on. We're located across the street from The Zipper, which has a coffee shop and a bunch of eateries, in case you need to pick something up!
✦ YARN YARN YARN ✦
We’ll provide all the tools, including a selection of acrylic yarn for you to use! Yarn colors and quantities are limited, so if your design requires specific colors/shades, we recommend you bring your own!
bringing your own yarn? Some pointers to keep in mind:
- acrylic yarn / worsted or medium weight
- no more than 5-6 colors
- recommended brands: big twist, red heart, caron, loops & threads
- suggested yarn stores: joann fabrics, michaels, fiber rhythm craft & design, SCRAP
- wind your yarn into cakes, if you have a winder! you'll need at least 2 cakes of each color, as we will be using 2 strands of the same color yarn in the machine together. we do have a couple yarn winders to use during the workshop!

email me an image of your design idea at least 3 days before the workshop! i will project your design onto the frame in preparation for the class.
working area size: 24" x 24"
first time tufting? Keep the design simpler with fewer colors + less linework!

This is an in-person workshop! Masks are optional.
Space is limited to 4 participants at a time. Classes are small, just how we like it!
Please tie back long hair and wear comfortable close-toed shoes.
Participants will be standing or sitting using the machine for extended periods of time. Tufting machines weigh 4 lbs and will require some arm + hand strength!
Restroom on premises.
No stairs.
Free street parking.
